Modern Ballads, working with metre and rhyme:

The maid von Nina Kopp, Nathalie Schweizer und Livia Sutter

The maid
von Nina Kopp, Nathalie Schweizer und Livia Sutter (4aAN)

Through a dark and foggy night

She was wandering around

In the meadows draped in shadows

There was not a single sound

Seeks her way through savage scrub

Passing roses sound asleep

Thorns were scratching, stings were snatching

Leaving cuts so numb and deep

Suddenly a man appeared

Right out of the wav’ring mist

Mem’ries surging, feelings merging

In the day they first had kissed

“Oh my lover, wait for me

why’d you leave your wife alone?

Though neglecting, not suspecting

Spotting, she would pick a bone!”

But the man, ignoring her

Just pursued his secret way

Without knowing where she w’s going

She did follow in the grey

While she w’s stumbling through the fog

His dark shadow guided her

Cries of fear then reached her ear an’

Instantly began to blur

Scraping, scrabbling, shov’ling earth

Digging deep into the ground

Was he chopping without stopping

Bones and innards all around

Ev’ry punch against the corpse

Made her vanish more and more

And her womb became a tomb

That’s the price she’s dying for
